Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a recent scam in which individuals are impersonating detention staff in an effort to extort money from families of inmates housed in the Onslow County Detention Center.
Several reports have been received involving scammers contacting individuals and falsely identifying themselves as employees of the detention facility. In these incidents, the caller informs the recipient that a family member or associate is eligible for release if a bond is paid, often demanding payment through untraceable methods such as Cash App or Venmo.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that bond payments are never collected by phone or through mobile payment apps. Official bond payments must be made through the Onslow County Magistrate's Office or via a licensed local bail bonding company.
