Pender County has officially acquired the 62-acre Abbey Nature Preserve, along with a 7.59-acre parcel, both generously donated by Mungo Homes. Together, the 69.59 acres will expand public green space, support conservation, and enhance recreational opportunities in one of the county’s fastest-growing areas.

The 7.59-acre parcel located at 90 Heart Pine Avenue in Wilmington will serve as the primary entrance to Abbey Nature Preserve and the site of a future county park. Since 2022, Pender County has operated Abbey Nature Preserve as a public park through a lease agreement with Mungo Homes; and with the land now secured, long-term planning for development and stewardship can move forward.

“This is an exciting step forward for Pender County,” said Randy Burton, chairman of the Pender County Board of Commissioners. “Mungo Homes has been generous in their contribution and engaged with our residents throughout the process. They have shown respect for both the people and what Abbey Nature Preserve means to them. We honor the long history of this land and remain committed to ensuring it will be a place for families to enjoy for generations to come.”

“Abbey Nature Preserve is a cherished place for many in our community,” said Zachary White, Parks and Recreation director. “We’re deeply thankful to have worked in collaboration with local residents, the NC Coastal Land Trust, and the developer to help ensure it remains open and accessible to the public.”

Planning and design for the future park and trailhead are underway. Pender County envisions a park that protects the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area while offering amenities such as a trailhead, playground, picnic shelter, restrooms, and educational signage highlighting local plants and wildlife.
