Candidate Questionnaire: Jeremy Shugarts for Surf City Council

1) What 3 changes, if any, would you like to see in the community you will be representing over the next four years?

No real changes. I want to make sure that people have all the facts so they can make better assessments. Disinformation is easily spread, and we must rapidly as a city do a better job by educating those citizens.

2) What strategy will you implement to respond to public concerns and criticisms?

Take the high road with hate filled comments on social media and make sure disinformation is corrected with fact and truth. I pride myself on connecting with the community. Surf City is made up of 10 times more space on the mainland and 5 times the voters, however I am the only council member out of the 5 of us that live on the mainland. Representing that group of citizens is critical!

3) How do you plan to measure and evaluate your success in office?

My constituents always say “why do you list out all of the things you have done for the community “I believe it’s our responsibility and we do these things because it is why we took the job. Handling issues and being available to your constituents is crucial.

4) Can you give an example of how you have supported a community project in the past?

The projects I’m currently working on are the Multi Use Path and our Sewage problem. These are close to my heart, and I want to get them completed before the next term would be up!

5) What personal or professional experience do you have that makes you qualified to serve your community?

Coming from a background of self employment and managing hundreds of employees gives me a different perspective in city management as there are many similarities. Coaching football at the high school, college and semi pro level has made me a better leader. Being the father of 6 children has taught me discernment.
